CLIENT: Freelance (2019)
SCOPE: Photography
I took urban black and white photography in Melbourne, inspired by graffiti, gritty textures, and graphite shapes, calls for an approach that emphasises raw, unfiltered energy and the city’s vibrant street culture.
The images should capture the contrast between Melbourne’s urban architecture and the dynamic, often chaotic beauty of graffiti art, focusing on weathered surfaces, peeling paint, and the intricate textures of brick walls. Graphite-like shapes—abstract and angular—can be incorporated through compositions or post-processing techniques, mimicking the fluid lines of street art.
The black and white palette heightens the grittiness, bringing out deep shadows and stark highlights, while emphasizing the raw, urban atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow should be used to draw attention to the layered textures of the city, creating a sense of movement and tension.
This approach results in powerful, visually engaging imagery that celebrates the rebellious, creative spirit of Melbourne’s streets.
